TO MARGARET CHO |

on Sun, Sep. 21, 2008 Cho takes on the cult of beauty By JANUARY HOLMES Comedian and actress Margaret Cho has been consumed by making the world funnier - juggling her comic talents with "The Cho Show," a new reality TV show on VH1, and her new "Beautiful" tour, which will hit 8 p.m. Thursday at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. During the show, which will feature her witty social commentary, Cho plans to rip open the mainstream notions of beauty and how they are, quite frankly, too unrealistic for us normal folks. Case in point: A DJ once posed a question to her about what she would do if she woke up a beautiful, 5-foot-11 blonde with blue eyes, weighing only 100 pounds. "Well, I probably wouldn't get up in that case, because I'd be too weak to stand," she said. "If that is his only idea of beauty, then I feel really for sorry him. I want everyone to feel beautiful and I want to do it with laughter. Why not feel good about ourselves?" The Herald caught up with the Asian queen of comedy via e-mail as she was traveling by plane last week. We posed our own quick list of random questions to see if life on and off camera was just as beautiful as being on stage. How has your comedy tour been going so far? Is this your first time hitting the Tampa area? How many times have you been on tour? And how do you have time to balance all you do while on tour? My tour has been amazing. I have been to Tampa a few times and I love that I get to come back again. I have been on tour solidly since 1988 - so a lot. I don't have time to balance a life outside of touring. I just tour. So how is life on "reality" TV? Love it! But it is fake. We script everything. Do you ever get tired of cameras following you around? No, because it is all scripted so we shoot it like a sitcom. It isn't invasive at all. What has been your favorite episode to shoot so far? I love 'Hauntgina' - where I think a part of my body is haunted. How does your family like being on the reality show? Was it something you had to talk them into or did they jump at the chance to be America's next favorite reality family? They love it. They said no at first, but I kept on them. Now they are really into it. Do you have any diva breakdown moments on your show a la Tyra Banks where you find yourself with tears streaming down your eyes? No, nothing like that. We wanted to just make a sitcom starring real people and it has worked phenomenally! Speaking of diva, I hear you will be featured in a pilot for Lifetime called "Drop Dead Diva." What's that about? It is about a thin woman who dies and is reincarnated into the body of a fat woman! It is amazing! So funny and touching. It is going to be huge. No pun intended. Any other new projects you're working on? A new comedy album with lots of music. You'll be turning 40 in a few months, how do plan to celebrate your birthday? I think I will go to Morocco, but I haven't decided yet. What's the greatest life lesson you've learn so far? Don't worry. How would you run the country if you could? And who would you pick for your vice president? I don't want the job. I think Obama is our guy. I would have loved to see Hillary as vice president, but you can't have everything. |
