For those that don't know, the thing that puts Margaret Cho on top of the comedy heap is her impressive ability to transition seamlessly from crude and vulgar to sweet and lady-like.

While her sometimes jaw-dropping tales may not be everyone’s idea of comedy, you’ve got to give the lady kudos for the sheer audacity to tackle the PC minefield that is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, racial stereotypes, drugs and politics head on. And she didn't hold back on this occasion - her opening monologue took shots at Aussie Prime Minister Julia Gillard's “Mars Attacks” dome like red hair, and later some Sarah Palin jokes we can’t repeat here.

Cho’s return to Australia saw the Sydney Opera House sold-out while the last twelve months have seen her circumnavigating the globe as part of her Cho Dependant tour. And while it may be true that she polarises audiences, it seems the 40-something comedian is doing something right - if her devoted following is anything to go by.

Expectations were high when Cho took the stage after John Roberts opened the show with some peculiar wigs and spot-on character comedy - and those in the audience looking forward to Cho’s brand of self-deprecating and controversial comedic stylings weren’t disappointed. The fact that she was smart enough to open the show with pot shots the Aussie PM suggesting she is vying for a role as Miranda in 'Sex and the City' made short work of getting the audience on side, judging by their loud hoots and clapping.

About ten minutes into the hour and a half long show, Cho cheekily gave a mini disclaimer, and perhaps for good reason: “I have to apologise if you didn’t know what you were coming to see...”

From one night stands to planning a family, Cho still happily reels off uncensored stories from her life on and off stage. Rubbing her belly at one point Cho pondered, “How do I make my son gay? How do I make that happen? If I listen to enough Lady Gaga while he’s in the womb, will he be ‘Born This Way?’”

After a marathon performance, with the audience hanging off every gag, she was coaxed back on stage to perform one final song (did we mention she sings too? And she isn't half bad!) with the central tell-it-like-it-is lyrics "eat sh*t and die."

It's not for the fient hearted, but if you're lucky enough to catch Margaret Cho on tour, you are in for a hell of a show. But if it's not your thing, Cho has a song for that...
