Margaret Cho knows how to make an entrance. Perhaps her new stint on Dancing with the Stars has helped, pushing her showmanship to a new level in her latest national concert tour, "Cho Dependent," which she showcased at the Grove of Anaheim on Thursday night. Known for bringing a fearless, racy dialogue to the stage – Cho gave the audience what they were looking for – edgy, politically incorrect material that was enough to make anyone blush. Always eager to share personal quips about her life, Thursday’s show was another display of the latest in Cho’s world – where she is now, what she is lusting for and what she thinks about the world and some people’s backward ways. Fresh off her Dancing with the Stars rehearsals, Cho also couldn’t resist the urge to promote her latest venture in the TV world –dancing alongside a long list of celebrities on primetime. Thrilled to have made it through the first round of cuts, Cho noted how she is ready to get “Tonya Harding” on everyone competing against her and how her proud Korean mother (who she loves to do impressions of in broken English) has been watching her less than thrilling scores from the sidelines with a look of concern. It was the spot-on impersonations of her mother that got the most chuckles from the crowd as did many of her other impressions of her grandfather and father throughout the show.Meshing both her stand-up and TV job together, Cho surprised the cheery audience by also bringing out her dance partner, Louis Van Amstel –shirtless of course – for a dance on stage at one point. Music has become key in Cho’s live shows and she proved it is also vital to the delivery of her stand-up routines on Thursday. Cho’s combination of singing and stand-up was the highlight of most of her two hours on stage. She sprinkled performances with three songs, hitting humorous notes with some surprising vocal chops and funny lyrics. She delivered an electro-rap tune as a duet with her opening act John Roberts, she also sang while strumming an acoustic guitar about a past lover turned convicted felon, and added a song filled with vulgarities intended for mature audiences that don’t squirm very easily. A big theme of her show was also sex- from sexting to imagining sex during her assisted living years. Cho did not hold back and let it all out there for everyone to hear. Of course, a Cho show is not complete without some talk of gay and lesbian issues as well. Cho made sure to throw some jabs at both Prop 8 and the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy and noted how fortunate she is to have gay friends with thriving sex lives and people like Lady Gaga that share her same views. Cho did not shy away from sharing some very personal material as well. For the first time she noted how she is in the midst of trying to conceive at 41 via artificial insemination. Her material about her personal life as always was raw, blunt yet endearing at the same time especially when she talked about her Korean family and her friends. In true Cho fashion, she spoke her mind and didn’t refrain from having a sharp tongue from the start. For some, that is show worthy of a standing ovation. |
