Album Review: Margaret Cho – “Beautiful’
(Image Entertainment)
Any comedy album that begins with the words “I fuckin’ hate
Sarah Palin” and ends with a song called “Eat Me Out”
has to be worth hearing. In this audio version of Margaret Cho’s
fifth concert film, she tackles all the subjects we’ve come to
expect from one of America’s most outspoken queer, feminist comedians:
race, politics and, most graphically, sex. The anecdotes included on
Beautiful range from a snarky retelling of the Larry Craig story (”the
Republican from Idaho, or should I say: He da ho!”) to a rundown
of the time Cho visited Birmingham’s Civil Rights museum and an
employee told her, “I know you people like to take you some pictures!”
On the sex tip, Cho compares threesomes to competitive eating, brags
that her “pussy is ripped” and complains about straight
guys and their pesky erections. Of course, she also throws some bones
to her loyal queer fans, celebrating the coming out of Clay Aiken and
Lindsay Lohan and poking fun at lesbian cruises. And, yes, fans: Margaret’s
mom does make an appearance. In fact, she even does “The Time
Warp.” Could we really ask for anything more?
