Margaret Cho talks politics, Star Wars
The comedian plays a sold-out show at Hard Rock Live on Friday
By John Graham
Margaret Cho's Friday show at Hard Rock Live has sold out, but fans of the comedian who can't scare up a seat should tune in this August to VH1. Thirteen years after the legendarily-troubled ABC sitcom “All-American Girl” (available on DVD with Cho commentary, by the way), she's coming back to commercial TV with “The Cho Show.”

John Graham talked with Cho on the phone about “The Cho Show,” her current stand-up tour “Beautiful,” Barack Obama and Chewbacca.

I imagine “The Cho Show” is not going to be your standard reality show.
No, it's very different and unique and amazing and funny. It stars me and my family and it's very wild. It's not really the traditional reality format where they follow me around. It's much more of a structured kind of show. I think it's almost like being on a sitcom actually. Like a sitcom but with real people.

What was the impetus for your new show, “Beautiful?”
The title comes out of this interview when a DJ asked me, “What if you woke up tomorrow and you were beautiful?” And I was like, “What do you mean?” and he said , “What if you woke up and you were blond and you had blue eyes and you were five foot eleven and you weighed a hundred pounds and you were beautiful? What would you do?”

I said I probably wouldn't get up because I'd be too weak to stand. This whole idea of there being only one kind of person that's beautiful is really boring. People should feel beautiful. It's a very important political motivator and life motivator.

You've told this story about this bonehead DJ before. Do you think, by now, that he knows who he is?
I don't even know who he is. I don't even remember who he is (laughs).

So you can't thank the jackass?
I don't even remember! I have no idea.

I assume this show, “Beautiful,” will become a CD and DVD?
Yes, eventually.

It's been three years since your last recording (“Assassin”). Has there been any change in your performances? Are you more political? More social? Where have you been going lately?
I think it's more social awareness. It's political, but it's different. The political environment is different. It's changed quite a lot. I think things are actually better than they were. It's political, but it's personal also.

You say things have gotten better. What do you mean? What's gotten better?
Well, George Bush is going to be out of office soon, so everybody's really excited about that. He's still president sorta, but not really.

Have you picked a candidate?
I'm actually an Obama campaign surrogate.

I don't even know what that is.
You go and speak on behalf of a political candidate. I've just done it a couple of times, but it's very cool. I think Obama's great. I think he and Hillary are great, but you've got to pick one.

I'm surprised any politician would pick any stand-up comedian to go out and be a surrogate for them. Politicians are so measured in what they say and comedians aren't.
I know. I think it's interesting. There aren't a lot of stand-up comedians who are doing it, but a few are out there - for Obama in particular. I know George Lopez was out there quite a lot.

Do you have to watch yourself and think, “OK, I'm speaking for Obama now and not speaking for Margaret?”
I don't do it very often so that hasn't come up.

Usually, comedians have something sparking their thoughts at the moment.
I'm excited because of the gay marriage ruling in California. That's a major thing. It's really kind of captured everybody's attention and it's a really great thing for the rest of the country too. I'm going to be deputized pretty soon by (San Francisco) Mayor Gavin Newsom. I'm going to be able to perform marriage ceremonies, which is really cool.

Got any appointments lined up?
Not yet, but I'm certainly open to anyone asking. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Coming to Orlando, I assume you know this show is in the middle of Gay Days.
Yeah, I'm glad about that. It's exciting.

You've played Orlando during Gay days before, haven't you?
I'm not sure. I feel like I have. Every time I go, it seems to be like that.

Not only are you going to be in Orlando during Gay days, but it's also Star Wars Weekends at Disney World. I heard you might be a closet Star Wars fan.
I'm not closeted about it at all. I'm very open about my Star Wars obsession. I especially love Chewbacca.

Oh, tell me more.
I think he's the most exciting of all the characters. He looks like a Pekingese.
