INTERVIEW -- Margaret Cho, an American comedian and actress, is best
known for her stand-up routines. As an actress, she is part of Lifetime
Television series, Drop Dead Diva, playing the role of Terri. She is
currently touring and can be seen competing on Dancing with the Stars.
Margaret will be performing in Boston on October 28th at the Wilbur
Theatre. Recently, I was able to catch up with Margaret and find out
a little more about her.
SD: Has your material/views on political and social issues toned down
at all from when you first began?
MC: I don’t believe so. My routine has become more focused on
marriage equability and gay rights. It is really important for me to
help those who feel invisible.
SD: Did any comedian pave the way for you? Are you paving the way for
the future comedian?
MC: Joan Rivers, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor - and I hope to be as good
as them. The one thing I would tell a new comedian is to stay in the
game. Comedy is hard but thrilling.
SD: How difficult is it going to be touring and performing on DWTS?
MC: It’s hard, but my partner, Louis, comes on the road with me.
He has become a major player in my life. Plus, touring has kept me out
of the studio and from getting sick, so I believe this is a big advantage
for me
.
SD: How much time do you spend rehearsing for your dance numbers?
MC: 6-7 hours a day. It is really hard to learn something new each week.
The trick is to make it look easy, but that only happens with lots of
work.
SD: How fun is it to be back on television and on such a great show
like Drop Dead Diva?
MC: I love it! It’s a fantastic show. It’s all about acceptance.
I am also glad that Terri’s storyline will be growing and becoming
more involved.
