Margaret
Cho: I'm a lot like Taylor Swift
Margaret Cho is coming off
her busiest year ever -- "Drop Dead Diva," "Dancing with
the Stars," a new comi-music CD -- but it looks like she's been
practicing super small penmanship in an attempt to keep adding more
to an already jam-packed calendar. In addition to returning for another
season of "DDD" and popping up on the third cycle of "RuPaul's
Drag Race," Margaret is in the middle of The Cho Dependent Tour.
On November 5, the bus stops
in NYC as Margaret participates in the sixth annual New York Comedy
Festival. I caught up with my favorite comedian to find out what you
can expect from her set, how she's feeling after being eliminated from
"DWTS" and what's next on the agenda!
PopWrap: For those people
who've never seen you live, what can they expect from the November 5
show?
Margaret Cho: It’s very funny, but it’s all about gay rights,
living in the south, being a very progressive person and a very prominent
member of the LGBT community yet living in a small town which is the
capital of the Southern Tea Party movement. We’re not talking
just Tea Partiers here, but Southern Tea Partiers. It’s soooo
conservative, so it’s politically motivated, but I’ll also
talk about “Dancing With The Stars,” immigration and my
mom. There'll also be some songs and a couple of surprises. It’s
a big extravaganza!
PW: I'm loving your CD, "Cho
Dependent" -- you're kinda like Taylor Swift writing songs about
all these exes!
Margaret: [laughs] I’m a lot like Taylor Swift. Although I did
work with Kanye’s producers on the CD, so it would be a little
strange.
PW: The night you were eliminated
from "DWTS," the other "in danger" celebrity was
Bristol Palin -- the irony of that couldn't have been lost on you.
Margaret: Not at all, she was teen abstinence versus me, gay pride --
which was simultaneously about the ending of gay teen suicide. And while
the show made her all about that, I had to interject mine to tell them
“we have to call an end to gay teen suicide.” So it really
was these two issues going head to head. And I thought, mine is so much
f***ing more important than yours [laughs]. You know?
PW: Absolutely. So were you
like the Alexis & Crystal of "DWTS?"
Margaret: The odd thing is that I really like Bristol. Well, I guess
that’s not so odd. I think she’s a great person and the
fact that we don’t agree politically has nothing to do with us
getting along. But I was disappointed to leave “DWTS” that
night. I want to think it was because I didn’t dance that well,
but ... I know that I did [laughs].
PW: It had to be a little
disheartening to leave the night after you made that speech.
Margaret: My feeling is, if one gay kid saw that and felt better, making
the decision to live, then I won.
PW: All in all, was "DWTS"
a positive experience for you?
Margaret: I loved every aspect it. The show really challenged me to
work harder on myself. It showed me how physically insecure I am. I
had been in denial about my body insecurity forever. As a stand-up comic,
I never have stage fright because I’m limitless when it comes
to language, but as a dancer, I was very limited in terms of the dance
language. It was very odd to me, but also a very nice discovery, so
my next album will be a dance album.
PW: Oh, there's nothing your
fans love more than a good dance CD.
Margaret: Yea, I’m totally going to work that. It’s going
to be more Lady CaCa. To me, dancing and singing simultaneously is the
ultimate – I just want the Madonna “Blonde Ambition”
microphone. Bottom line.
PW: Which remaining dancer
are you throwing your money behind?
Margaret: My favorite is Jennifer [Grey], she's above and beyond the
best dancer out of everybody. She dances with her heart and soul, which
is so beautiful to see. But she was in the bottom two weeks ago, so
you never know.
PW: I know, I'm a little
worried Bristol could win -- the judges are so much easier on her also.
Margaret: They judge on a curve. With Bristol, I think they’re
judging her on growth and how out of her comfort zone she is. And she’s
really been getting out of her comfort zone ... writhing on the floor
in her underwear. And I wonder, what does this have to do with teen
abstinence? Although, I have to say Sarah Palin was quite nice to me
also. We never “met” but she kept waving at me. It was so
surreal.
PW: Sarah probably thinks
if she can win you over, nothing is impossible
Margaret: [laughs] True. They’re nice people – as long as
they are there and not in the white house, I’m good. Now we need
Christine O’Donnell on the next season.
PW: Oh, she'd have to dance
to "Witchy Woman!"
Margaret: Only Stevie Nicks songs! [laughs]
PW: And then you'll back
back on TV some time next year with season three of "Drop Dead
Diva," which is very exciting.
Margaret: I know and we ended on such a cliffhanger – that cast
doesn’t even know! We just barely get the scripts, it is a mystery
to us also.
PW: What would you like to
happen with Teri next season?
Margaret: Yea, I would love to do a stakeout! That would be fierce.
Bring some Inspector Realness.
PW: That reminds me, when
are you going to be on "RuPaul's Drag Race?!?"
Margaret: Well .. I think that question will be answered soon [laughs]!
I love that show.
PW: And this comedy tour
is sponsored by Logo, any chance we’ll get another Cho Show?
Margaret: I would love to reunite that cast. To me, that was one of
the best jobs I ever had. It was with my true family so it would feel
amazing to do something like that again. |
