Margaret
Cho's True Colors
By Drew Wilson
One of the funniest comedians ever, Margaret Cho is the perfect choice
to host the upcoming musical extravaganza that is the True Colors Tour.
Coming to Red Rocks on Sunday, June 10, the True Colors Tour is the
brainchild of the legendary Cyndi Lauper and brings together a rotating
lineup of superstars that will rock your world at the same time it attempts
to change the world. Here's what Margaret had to say about the tour,
gay rights, tattoos and belly dancing.
Drew Wilson: Hey, Margaret,
how did you get involved with the True Colors Tour?
Margaret Cho: Well, I'm a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper, so basically when
she asks you to do something, you just do it. I know she's been planning
this tour for a long time, and I'd kind of been hearing about it over
the years, and we finally got to make it work. And I'm really excited
because I'm not only a fan of hers, but I'm a fan of everyone on this
bill. This is a show that I would love to go see, so I feel especially
lucky that I get to be in the show and I get to watch it every night.
DW: How much Margaret are
we going to be getting? A little? A lot?
MC: Oh, you're going to get a lot of me, actually, because since I'm
hosting the whole thing, I'll be on between every act and working the
crowd and making sure that everybody's OK and doing stuff with different
people and doing some music myself. So I'll be performing with the Dresden
Dolls for sure, and I'll probably be the person that's going to be performing
more than everybody else.
DW: And it's all for such
a good cause.
MC: Yes, it's great. It's a good cause, but what's really exciting about
it to me is that it's just all these great musicians and great bands
playing live, and in addition to that, you're really helping out the
HRC (Human Rights Campaign) and really coming together as a community.
It's going to be amazing to see all the different groups of people this
concert will be bringing together.
DW: What do you expect from
the crowd?
MC: Lots of cruising. And I'll help organize that.
DW: And what are Margaret
Cho's Rules for Cruising?
MC: I think you just need to have, like, a really open mind and just
go expecting to have a great time because you will. And wear something
fabulous and feel good, and I think it's going to be great. It's a long
show, so there are lots of cruising opportunities, and you can just
cruise at will. There's somebody for everyone. Younger. Older. Cute.
More handsome. Beautiful. Divas. Boys. Girls. Everything.
DW: Speaking of everything.
I don't know if it's common knowledge, but you now identify as bisexual.
Does being a part of the community change anything for you as far as
your political outlook?
MC: It's not really changed my outlook, because it's always been the
same. It's more like I just became more political as I've gotten older
and more focused on certain issues like gay marriage. What else is important
is changing legislation and creating more anti-hate laws that will really
make it just as bad to discriminate against somebody for their sexual
orientation as for their race or religion. We're not there yet and it's
really alarming. There is a lot of stuff, but it almost has less to
do with my own orientation than because I think people that are straight
should be supportive of this, because this kind of thing affects everybody
- it's not just a gay issue. The thing about it is that hate crimes
exist and they're out there and they're so bad. The violence against
the GLBT community is so huge, and if you live in that kind of environment
constantly, it can really kill your spirit. We really have to get the
message out there that this kind of crime is just wrong. The most important
thing is to save people's lives.
DW: Absolutely. On a lighter
note, I read that you've recently gotten all tatted up.
MC: I am! I like it. I think it's fun. It's really about celebration
of the body to me. I didn't start it until I was 35 and I really love
it. I like traditional Japanese style. I plan to get a whole bodysuit
by the time I'm old. I want to be one of those crazy old tattoo ladies.
DW: And you're also big into
belly dancing?
MC: Yeah, belly dancing is the same thing. It's just about having fun
with the body and a certain freedom that I didn't necessarily have when
I was younger, so they are both celebratory things.
DW: How's your marriage working
out?
MC: Oh, I love it. I'm straight married, but I think it's so important
for gays and lesbians to have that right, because ultimately I think
that people need people. We're not solitary creatures, and for the government
not to acknowledge gays and their relationships is really criminal and
something needs to be done about it.
DW: What are the best and
worst things about being married?
MC: Well, the best thing is that you have somebody to be with all the
time and that's beautiful, but that's also the worst thing because sometimes
you don't want that.
DW: I'm sorry if this is
old news to you, but I recently discovered you're "My Puss"
video, thanks to the wonders of YouTube. I think it's the funniest thing
ever.
MC: Thank you! I'm actually going to be performing that on the tour.
I'm bringing my friend Diana, who plays in my little rap group called
Maureen and Angela. That is a fun song and such a fun video. I love
making videos. I just made one for an artist called Garrison Starr.
She's great. I'm making one for The Cliks, who are on the tour. I just
love being behind the camera.
DW: What message do you have
for readers of Out Front Colorado?
MC: I'm really excited to bring the True Colors Tour to Denver. It's
going to be awesome! |
