TO MARGARET CHO |
Margaret Cho on Last Meals, Dick Songs, and Her Upcoming Show at Dodge Theatre By Niki D'Andrea, Fri., Sep. 17 2010 @ 12:30PM
When tickets for comedian Margaret Cho's show at Dodge Theatre this Saturday first went on sale, we were stoked. Because in addition to her raunchy stand-up comedy (including but not limited to dick jokes, gay jokes, riffs on race, and impersonations of her Korean mother), Cho will be singing at this show, too. Oh yeah. Her latest album, Cho Dependent (Clownery Records), features a slew of guest musicians, including Tegan and Sara, Ben Lee, and Ani DiFranco, all playing backup while Cho sings tunes like "Eat Shit and Die" We caught up with Cho to ask a few questions about her upcoming show and future plans. Love the video for "Eat
Shit and Die." But if you knew you were going to die and could
pick your last meal, what would it be? We laughed a lot, but it was mostly hard work! It's hard work to be a singer and to play in the studio. It has to be perfect -- studio time is costly, and everyone had lots of other projects happening, too. So they were gracious enough to give me their time for this album -- so, very few pranks and shenanigans, and lots of work. But fun and lovely and inspiring and beautiful as well. I love everyone on this album so much. I did notice that I could eat everyone under the table! Cho Dependent has an homage to man parts called "Your Dick."
Why do you think there are so few similar songs paying tribute to the
phallus? What songs do you always find yourself singing along to when you hear
them? How is the Cho Dependent tour different from your previous tours? Margaret Cho is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at Dodge Theatre, 400 W. Washington Street. Tickets cost $40.50 to $57.50. Call 602-379-2800 or visit www.livenation.com for more information. Check out "Niki at Nite" on Jackalope Ranch on Monday for a recap of Margaret Cho's show -- and perhaps some after show surprises. |
