5 Questions with Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho is experiencing a creative resurgence that is taking Hollywood, her fans and even Broadway by storm. The comedian's resume runs the gamut from stand-up to movies, blog-writing to belly dancing and even the star of her own burlesque-style variety show.
With all this excitement, Cho found time to host the True Colors Tour starring Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry, Erasure and others.

As of late, Cho appeared as a guest star on Sci-Fi's “The Lost Room," as well as a recurring role on Fox's sitcom “Till Death." Cho also directed a short film and starred in her self-produced full-length feature, “Bam Bam & Celeste," which comes to DVD in August. She took the time to talk to At The Shore.

Q: What has your experience been like so far on the True Colors Tour?

A: (Rehearsals) have been really exciting. We've had full-scale dress rehearsals, everybody wearing their outfits (but) it's funny to see it with no audience. Incredibly iconic performers, famous people, and there was nobody there!

(The rehearsal) was hard for me because I sort of need an audience without being self conscious, but it's funny for me, too, because it's humbling.

Q: Do you have anything special planned for the tour other than your comedy routine?

A: I will be singing with everybody for a big encore. Cyndi (Lauper) has been teaching me to sing. I'm so lucky she's my coach. I feel like I'm on “American Idol"; I feel like Sanjaya! It's so funny because I can't sing that good, (but) it's so much fun.

Q: I have to ask — what are Cyndi and Debbie like? Don't you miss Cyndi's wild '80s hair?

A: Cyndi is exactly how you expect her to be. She's really warm, funny, sweet — just beautiful. And she's still pretty wild. She's got this gorgeous purple-y hair. She's a magical person.

When I was a kid and “Heart of Glass" (by Blondie/Deborah Harry) was No. 1 on the “Solid Gold Countdown," I saw the video and took my t-shirt and stretched my arm through the neck to make it into a one-armed shirt. I wanted to be just like her.

The kids on the tour are all in awe of her (Harry). Every time we talk to her, we get scared; we all have a huge crush on her.

Q: Your variety show, “The Sensuous Woman," has seen much success and even has a Broadway run lined up for this fall … so what makes you and your cast so sensuous?

A: We are all beautiful women, kind of a little bit older and wiser. It's a sexy, fun, beautiful show. I'm very proud of it; it's amazing work. And it is bringing new people to the public (so that) is really exciting.

Q: You're scheduled to be the guest co-host on “The View" on Monday, June 18, and I've read Rosie O'Donnell is going to be on some of the True Colors Tour with you. Has she given you any advice on how to pick a fight with Elizabeth Hasselback?

A: (Laughing) Rosie will be joining us on the show (on opening night); I'll have to ask her about that!
