REMEDY
JAM SESSION WITH CULTURAL ICON MARGARET CHO! “You don’t have to be told that you are beautiful, to be beautiful.” Having just appeared on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and in the middle of a very busy schedule shooting the new season of “Drop Dead Diva,” Comic, Actor, Musician and Activist Margaret Cho takes a quick break to chat with us for our exclusive Remedy Jam Session! Margaret, thank you so much for taking the time to be part of REMEDY JAM OUTBURST! Let’s jump right in! RJO: Margaret, you bring your ideas to life, without barriers and without hesitation. It’s part of what makes you a true artist. You are also one of the few women (Christine Lavin, Sandra Bernhard) who have released comedy music. What is the inspiration behind the songs on your current album “Cho Dependent?” We wish we were a fly on the wall when you and Ani were discussing “ Captain Cameltoe!” MARGARET CHO: I am such a music geek and have been lurking backstage at rock shows for as long as I have been a comic (long time). I’ve built a lot of friendships with amazing musicians and I thought this album would be the perfect way to bring my friends to work with me. Also I got to meet amazing people who wanted to play on the album. It was intensely gratifying and humbling to work with such talents as Ani Difranco and Jon Brion, as well as Fiona Apple, Ben Lee, Grant Lee Phillips, Andrew Bird, Tegan and Aara, Brendan Benson – everyone was amazing and the record came out great. RJO: Thank you for representing US by wearing a rainbow dress on “Dancing With The Stars.” It is just one example of how you’ve impacted our culture through your career. In light of current events, what would you say directly to gay kids who are being bullied? What would you say to the bullies themselves? MC: I want to tell them to hang in there, and not to let other people dictate how you feel about yourself. I think bullies need to understand that you can kill someone’s spirit easily… and that it all has repercussions. Often I think these bullies are probably afraid that they are gay themselves, and are diverting attention from it by being a bully. Its insanity. RJO: In your work as a comic, you have put so much of your life on display for all to see. Is there anything you refuse to write or joke about? What is one thing your fans would be surprised to know about you? MC: I don’t really have any rules about what I will talk about. It just has to be worth it. There has to be a good joke there or else its not going to work for me! I think people would be surprised to know I’m a pretty good cook and can kick things really hard. These two are unrelated. RJO: Ha! Ok, now for our lightening round. RJO: New York or Los Angeles? MC: I love both! RJO: Blood Orange or Grapefruit? MC: Grapefruit! RJO: Larry King or Piers Morgan? MC: I’m curious about Piers and want to know more. RJO: Regis or Kelly? MC: Kelly! RJO: Yoga or Pilates? MC: Pilates please! RJO: Acting, stand up, or music? MC: Stand up is my first love but music is like a loving second marriage. RJO: What are your Remedy Jams? MC: My favorite songs are “ Criminal” by Fiona Apple, “ Smiling Underneath” by Ani Difranco and “ Superhero” by Garrison Starr. RJO: You once said “You don’t have to be told that you are beautiful, to be beautiful.” We LOVE that quote. Your show “Drop Dead Diva” that airs on Lifetime promotes beauty in many forms. What can we expect from the third season, which premieres this summer? MC: We are shooting now and there’s lots of romance this season. My character Teri has had a sexy start of the season and there’s so much happening. You have to watch when it premieres this June on Lifetime! RJO: Thanks you so much for being a part of our Remedy Jam Session series Margaret! We also want to mention that “Cho Dependent” will be released as a movie this summer so stay tuned for official date announcements at www.margaretcho.com! |
