Margaret Cho returns to form at the Paramount
The Candy's Heather Brammer caught Margaret Cho at the Paramount Theatre last weekend. Here are her thoughts on the show:

Hey, Margaret Cho is funny again!

See, I'd turned off the Cho for a while because she got all angry political on us. There's a difference between "bemused and aggravated" funny political and just "venting hate" uncomfortable political, and the hate ain't all that funny, unless you're Doug Stanhope.

But the old Cho was back on Friday as we were entertained by her stories of olive oil shooting from her butt, time-honored tales of gay leatherdaddies and of course, Margaret's famous impression of her immigrant mother. I was with a bunch of straight, married people so among my group I was the only one laughing at the "slutty part-time lesbian" innuendos and "boys who love boys and the chunky girls who love them" jokes. Their loss. There were enough drunk lesbians and boys in faux-hawks who work at Sephora in attendance to make up for my confused, conservative coworkers.

In addition to the spoken stuff, Ms. Cho has recently released an album, and we got to hear a few songs peppered throughout the set. And they were good! And she can sing!

She revisited some old material from her television show "All American Girl" as a segueway to the country-tinged Andrew Bird collaboration, "I'm Sorry." Her voice and accent are actually very well-suited for country music without being a parody, not to mention it's quite pretty in general. PS: The song itself? Hysterical. It's an apology for going apeshit on some dude. I'll leave it at that.

Soon after, we heard the ballad "Your Dick," dedicated to all the tops in the room. People around me were actually singing the chorus to their dates. As a finale, we heard a rap-inspired track "My Puss" sung in the notable imitation of Margaret's mother. It's basically a "Yo Mama"- style rap about dueling vaginas. Yes, that's right. Dueling vaginas.

From the Margaret Cho official website: "Margaret’s brand new album, Cho Dependent, featuring comedy songs she collaborated on with Ben Lee, Tegan and Sara, Fiona Apple, Brendan Benson, Jon Brion, Garrison Starr, Meghan Toohey, Ani DiFranco, Tommy Chong, Grant Lee Phillips, Rachael Yamagata, AC Newman, Patty Griffin and Andrew Bird"

Are you kidding me? Who doesn't she know? Based on just the little bit we heard Friday night, I think I'll have to check out the whole album.
