TO MARGARET CHO |
Memories
of @MargaretCho The lovely and talented Margaret Cho killed it at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday. The receptive crowd was enraptured by her scatalogically-inspired storytelling, her filthy potty mouth and her mad singing skillz. As surprised as many of her fans are that she actually had the brass ovaries to put out a musical comedy album, (Cho Dependent was released last week) they were probably even more surprised that the girl can actually… sing. Really well. (If she can dance as well as she can sing Cho will destroy on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars!) On numbers like “Your Dick” – a loving ode to the male member co-written by New Pornographer Carl Newman that effortlessly managed to rhyme “South Carolina” with “vagina” – Miss Cho managed to seamlessly weave her humour with a certain Broadway bravado that was entirely unexpected yet totally appreciated. Opening act Ian Harvie was
something of a revelation for a number of reasons … primarily
that this transgendered man’s comedy was as utterly hilarious
as it was completely endearing. His many stories and anecdotes were
at times poignant and cutting. After the show both my guest and I agreed
that the openness and candor he parlayed about his own experience in
turn became our own, which is such a beautiful outcome. When Harvey
comes back to Vancity I heartily recommend checking him out. |
