The Dollyrots have a driving rock sound with good vocals and barre chord guitar parts - and a strange band name. The sound of this band reflects elements of classic rock and punk bands similar to Joan Jett, the Ramones and maybe the Vines.

The lyrics are kind of silly but definitely keep your attention. I can imagine this as material for background music on current cartoons or contemporary movies.

The song "Because I'm Awesome" starts out with a descending chord riff with good drums and bass, and more of a punk-rock guitar styling. This song's lyrics seem to reflect self-confidence and self-esteem. Playing very consistently seems to be this bands' positive point.

The song "Brand New Key" is almost a melody for a country tune that transcends into a full-out punk rock song. You can imagine Iggy Pop covering a tune like this. It has a driving distortion to it.

"Out of L.A." has a bass line similar to, maybe, a Pixies tune. It has transcending melodies and a slight keyboard effect in the background, along with more vocal harmonies than any other song on the CD. This tune has a sound that is similar to Avril Lavigne. It also seems to be a softer, more melodious ballad compared to the other songs on this disc.

If your taste in music runs somewhere between Joan Jett, Avril Lavigne and the Ramones, then try the Dollyrots' new CD "Because I'm Awesome" at www.blackheart.com and www.thedollyrots.com.

The Dollyrots play Sector 7g, 7th and Ellis St., Augusta, on Oct. 28.
