| Return to The Dollyrots | Fan, mentor support aligning for Dollyrots
Thursday, October 11, 2007 So far, The Dollyrots have made a career out of - as lead singer and bassist Kelly Ogden puts it - "things happening when we least expect it." It started last August, when The Dollyrots' single "Because I'm Awesome" was chosen to spearhead the back-to-school campaign for Kohl's department stores. Soon their infectious ode to ego could be heard on the nationwide commercial, resulting in a wave of exposure and, according to Ogden, a shift in their fan base. "Suddenly at our shows, we were getting a lot of younger kids," said Ogden. "It was a new thing for us: mixing our older punk-rock fans who had been with us from the beginning with kids who had heard us on Radio Disney. It was something that we would have never predicted." The pop-punk trio formed in 2000, when childhood friends Ogden and guitar player Luis Cabezas were working towards biology degrees at a college in Florida. But when the results of the presidential election hit, the two opted to ditch the lab coats and start a band. "We were trying to decide what to do with our lives, and the election was the wake-up call," said Ogden. "We thought, 'We might as well start a band because the world's probably going to end anyway.'" Soon after, Ogden and Cabezas moved to Los Angeles and met drummer Chris Black. The trio split their time between honing their skills on the indie-rock scene in Silver Lake and balancing odd jobs to make ends meet (Ogden's most random stint? Being an animal supervisor at the California Science Center.). The Dollyrots released their debut album in 2004, only to be left without a label when their record company was forced to scale back two years later. But the group, which was traveling the country on the Vans Warped Tour, found support in a fellow femme rocker on the Warped roster: Joan Jett. "It was the second-to-last day of the tour, and Joan had just finished playing her set. I finally had the guts to go up to her and give her our CD," said Ogden. "She ended up loving it, and the rest came pretty naturally." Jett signed the group to her label, Blackheart Records, in 2006. Since then, they've toured the country in support of a new album, and Ogden admitted to having found a mentor in Jett. "I had always looked up to her before, and even more now. She's not afraid to do her own thing. Over summer, we got to play a show with her on Pier 54 in New York City, which was a huge highlight for me," said Ogden. "It's definitely been a surreal year." |
