‘Tis the season with A Blackheart Christmas. Various Artists Tired of suffering through
the same old Bing Crosby/Nat King Cole generation of Christmas music?
Joan Jett has a cure for your woes, with this rockin’ collection
of holiday classics and original tunes, now available on vinyl through
her label, Blackheart Records. Serving up the cheer are bands such
as Girl in a Coma, The Dollyrots, The Vacancies, The Cute Lepers,
and the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll herself. Texas trio Girl
in a Coma channels Elvis on its countrified rendering of “Blue
Christmas,” while The Dollyrots summon the ghosts of riot girls
past for an in-your-face version of “Santa Baby.” You’ll
want to bundle up and sing along with Thommy Price and Nefertiti Bones’
merry “Winter Wonderland,” which sets the perfect party
tone. But the disc’s standout track has to be Jett’s guitar-driven
cover of “Silent Night,” which features “special
guests” in the form of samples from President Obama’s
acceptance speech and even Sarah Palin’s infamous “I can
see Russia” sound bite. Joan Jett rules the season — but
you already knew that. |
