Rock Icon Explains Why Compassion Is a Sign of Strength June 7, 2006 And she doesn't take kindly to the myth held by some that going vegetarian
and having compassion for animals is a sign of weakness. "I think
it's the opposite," says Joan. "People who say things like
that are the weak ones for eating animals when it is completely unnecessary
to do so in order to sustain life. To give in to the urge to eat flesh
just because Joan's fans will be thrilled to learn that she's playing the Warped Tour this summer and that peta2 is giving away 100 tickets for the festival. No one in the rock 'n' roll business has done more to shatter the glass ceiling for women than Joan has, which is why The New York Times dubbed her the "godmother to female musicians with loud guitars and idealistic dreams." She formed her first band, The Runaways, at age 15 and became the first female performer to start her own record label, Blackheart Records, which represents The Vacancies and The Eyeliners as well as her own band, The Blackhearts. Her classic hit "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" owned the number one spot on the Billboard charts for eight weeks running and is Billboard's number 28 song of all time. Joan Jett joins a growing list of musicians-including Morrissey, The Donnas, Le Tigre, and Tegan and Sara-who have teamed up with peta2 to inspire kids to challenge outdated, cruel attitudes about animals. Also featured on peta2.com are celebrity interviews, message boards, merchandise, downloadable voice-mail recordings, and chances to win great prizes like free concert tickets, iPods, and more.
