Return to The Lashes

The Lashes, "Get It" (Red Ink/Columbia) *** - If your band isn't playing pop-punk, it's rehashing the weird-hair days of 1980s New Wave.

Actually, if you're Seattle product the Lashes, you're kinda putting both elements together. While that might
sound dull or overdone, in the case of the band's major label debut "Get It," it surprisingly isn't.

Many of the 11 songs are quite catchy, with the band putting together more-than-marketable guitar lines,
combined with Ben Clark's deep, moody vocals.

Opener "New Best Friend" pleads for someone to be a new pal, or maybe a bit more than that, in as poppy a manner possible. "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" sounds like it was ripped from Rivers Cuomo's
songbook, as Clark admits of his crush, "I can't get this song out of my head."

"Dear Hollywood" is a midtempo song with a sad undercurrent, "The World Needs More Love Letters"
hopes humanity will grow kinder, and closer "Wanna Girl" would make Cheap Trick proud.

The Lashes don't dig deep into emotional and intellectual material, nor should they. They're tapped
into making music that'll cause people to dance, and what's wrong with that?
