ORGY - WHEN GENRE'S COLLIDE

Interview by Steve Duffy

The best rock music always combines raw power and absolute panache. It can forge heavy, almost Palaeolithic riffs - yet retain intelligence, cunning, and pure pop hummability. But records like that don't come along very often. Enter Punk Statik Paranoia, the latest and greatest Bacchanalian musical salvo from death-pop quintet Orgy. This Southern Californian band hit the music scene in 1997 and soon became the first act signed to Korn's fledgling Elementree label. Now the multi-platinum alt/techno-metal band Orgy, comprising of vocalist Jay Gordon, guitarist Ryan Shuck, synth-guitairist Amir Derakh, bassist Paige Haley and drummer Bobby Hewitt, will release their first studio album in over two years.

SD: How did the band get together?

JG: We met through other bands. Then we just started making recordings in my friend's garage.

SD: How did the name Orgy come about?

JG: With so many styles of music brought together, it was like an orgy of music and that is how we came up with the band name.

SD: If someone that hasn't heard of Orgy, asked you what your music is about, what would you tell them?

JG: There really is no message. We just take current events mix in our life and how I envision the world to be and that is our music. I like for our fans to take their own message out of our songs.

SD: What has influenced your looks & style?

JG: Fashion. We are always looking to pop culture and fashion to set our style.

SD: Who has influenced the band musically?

JG: David Bowie and the 80's.

SD: How has your new CD "Punk *Statik* Paranoia" evolved since the success of "Candyass?"

JG: The music has gotten a lot more simplified. This CD has a lot heavier music. As a band we are always looking for ways to evolve our sound. We try not to let anything shape our sound.

SD: What's coming up next for Orgy?

JG: We will be going on tour to promote our new CD, which will be released Feb 24, 2004, and also will be making a few videos.

SD: Any big plans for Valentine's Day?

JG: If I had a girlfriend it would be yes, but since I don't, just another workday.

SD: How does the band relax from a "chaotic" day?

JG: Sleep and Alcohol!
