Von
Iva are ready to become "Girls on Film"
by Trish Bendix
San Francisco-based trio Von Iva is readying to have the best end to
2008 possible. Having been discovered randomly by a film producer in
a record store (he liked the look of them from their CD cover and then
liked the music even more), the band was picked to star alongside Zooey
Deschanel in the film Yes Man. The release date was just announced and
it looks like Dec. 19 will be when you can see Zooey singing alongside
Jillian, Bex and Lay Lay in the fictional band Munchausen by Proxy.
Before that, though, Von Iva
will be releasing a new EP. Titled Girls on Film (how completely appropriate),
the six-song disc drops Oct. 28. It features three of their best songs
from the 2007 album On This Island (“LALA,” “Birds of
Prey” and “Guise”) and three new tracks (“Living
For It,” “Emerald Eyes” and “Electricity”).
If you happened to miss my
short profile of Von Iva in last month's Queer Women to Watch: Fall, then
I'll remind you: Bex and Lay Lay play for our team, and are also a couple
(five years running!) Gay girls who can play very, very well — I'm
always behind that.
If you're a fan of Le Tigre, Lesbians on Ecstasy, The Blow or The Gossip,
Von Iva should be your new discovery. Check them out on tour now through
December. On select dates, they'll be joined by Girl in a Coma. That's
sure to be one amazingly lesbian rock show. I can just see the missed
connections now.
