Von
Iva
Friday, Jan. 30, at the Red and the Black
By Steve Kolowich
Jan. 29 - Feb. 4, 2009 (Vol. 29, #5)
Von Iva doesn’t care about your new Costello frames or your Basement
Tapes vinyl; its members just want to dance. The chick-rock three-piece
from San Francisco forgoes not just hipster cred but also mawkish crooning
and artful instrumentation in favor of rough-edged soul and dirty, danceable
music. In her role as frontwoman, Jillian Iva is half-diva, half-dominatrix,
ordering you to “Move your body, shake it, make it change now/Whatchou
gonna do about it?” The songs that carry her instructions are
driven by pulsing drums and digitized hooks, but really they’re
just vessels for Iva’s voice, which remains pitch-perfect even
when she is violently jerking her gangly frame about the stage. You’d
best be ready to dance—if you fail to follow her lead, she may
kick a hole through your torso.
VON IVA PERFORMS FRIDAY, JAN. 30, WITH NICO VEGA AND THE SEMI PRECIOUS
WEAPONS AT THE RED AND THE BLACK, 1212 H ST. NE. $10. (202) 399-3201.
